Confession Of An AH Junkie (Warcraft atlas mod)

This is something I’ve been doing myself for awhile and I’ll just say: It’s not for everyone and YMMV (I realize there have been a couple of other posts with this concept however I am going to attempt to explain exactly what has worked for me leaving as little guesswork as possible)

The concept and general description…
For all of this to work you do have to have a base fund, the bigger the better. Aside from that I’d HIGHLY sugguest just taking some time when you play for a couple of weeks just watch the AH prices and some trade chat so you can get a feel for which items in particular are sought after and at what prices. The basis of this strat is to basically daytrade some of the more highly sought after items. I started off somewhat small and have "graduated" to some high ticket items since I am quite comfortable with my ability to recognize which items I will be able to resell for a good profit and I know that I have the patience to hold out to do so. Personally I prefer weapons and armor but this can be applied to other high commodity items as well.

If you want to make a noticeable amount of money you will have to focus on rares and epics and ensure that there is enough of a price difference between what you are paying and how much you can sell it for taking intto account the possibility of multiple days’ listing fees. I currently only deal in items that sell for at least 50g and on which I will make at least 10-15g however keep in mind that this is simply a baseline and I frequently make over 50g per transaction (the most I’ve ever received from a single item is 125g minus listing fee and AH fee).

If you have the patience to do so you can also increase your profits by selling through the trade channel where you won’t have to deal with the AH taking their cut or having an auction expire however keep in mind that you do want to keep items moving as quickly as possible while still making your profit as having liquid funds is essential to keeping money coming in.

While I am, of course, in this to make money I also give people the best deals I can (again, liquid funds are much more useful – profit is profit and you want to keep in mind that holding out for 5g more when you’re making a good 25g on the sale already may simply result in you having the item for an extra few hours during which time you may miss out on another deal because you didn’t have the funds to buy…. Again, this becomes all a matter of your understanding of what you need to have on you to keep business moving.

For these high ticket items, unless the particular item moves VERY quickly on your server, you will have to undercut the competition for the most part… ideally there will be no competition (however this is where your knowledge of the items value comes into play very significantly). If there is no competition the key point to keep in mind is people’s need to have things right away, but also realize that people aren’t stupid…. If you list an item for 100g min bid and have a 130g BO 9 times out of 10 you won’t get boughtout unless there is high high demand for the item. People aren’t stupid and an extra 30% off what they "could" get it for is alot… so, as a rule of thumb either keep your MB and BO the same or keep them more reasonably close… even though someone wouldn’t pay the 130g with a 100g min list it at 120g with a 130g BO… this 10g jump is less than 10% difference (which also means that if 1 person bids on it anyway the next "min bid" to put on it would be 132g so you’re going to get boughtout if there’s multiple interest in the item).

You’re patient… your buyers, however, often aren’t…. 24hour listing keep you visible for maximum exposure and also result in more buyouts… that "Very Long" tag means 8-24hours remaining and if someone wants your item then more often then not they’ll pay that extra little bit of gold to have it then and there

Tuesday is patch day! Try to time your auctions well and keep in mind that you’re losing out on some of your money by listing on Monday nights…. The AH timer continues to run while the servers are down so you’re losing out on a good chunk of the time you paid for your auction to be listed… don’t get me wrong though, if you’re not going to be able to get on Tuesday when the servers are back up to relist then by all means go ahead and list Monday nights…. I find Tuesdays to be a good time for the auction house especially after a patch where people will download it and logon to check out changes (and inevitably check out what goodies are listed for them on the AH

Again, I don’t think this is for everyone as it does involve a time investment on your part as well as a starting bankroll, however for those who think they might like trying their hand at the market I wish you the best of luck and I hope this information is of some use to you. I know to some of you this seems like "obvious" information but believe me, I find myself helping my guild more with auctioning than with leveling because to them it’s just a big mystery…

Powerleveling Guide (Warcraft ii)

I recently lost an account because Blizzard mistakenly thought I was running a bot program when, in fact, I was playing in a scaled VNC window at 2 frames/sec. They wouldn’t listen and didn’t care, so I went and started a new account to try to regain my level 60 priest.

First time around it took about 5 months to get to 60 in casual playing. This time it took about 3 weeks of intensive leveling and I thought I would post what I did for others:

1. Do as many red quests as you possibly can. Don’t worry about the difficulty. Red quests done quickly give the best XP (sometimes 6000 or more).
2. Have a guildy or two help you blow through those red quests. The key here is fast.
3. Find areas that you can "grind" XP. This is the worst part. It is crucial that you do this alone, not in groups. No matter what anyone says, grinding alone gets you much more XP than any other method. I did this by turning off all sound in the game, throwing a good DVD or recorded TV show up on my second monitor and just runing around in about the same area killing as much and as fast as possible. Try to find that point at which you can continuously kill stuff without having to break for mana drinks or health regens.

I know this sounds boring, and it really is. I’ve read a lot of "1-60 in 2 days" posts that are simply false. I think this is the only real way of being able to get to 60 in any reasonable time. By the way, time played for my character when I hit 60 was about 12 game-days total.

From 50-60 my average xp/hr was about 22k and I did 1-2 levels a day easily.

I hope this helps!

This came out of a response to another thread and ended up being a detailed grinding guide. I hope this helps you struggling LWs out there. I know I wish I had it when I was wallowing in the mid 200s.

200-220(ish) Thick armor kits http://www.thottbot.com/?i=4617

215-230 Big Voodoo Robe http://www.thottbot.com/?i=4064
Youre going to have to buy the pattern but it really shouldn’t be that expenisve. A few stacks of armor kits will cover it easily. To make these, you need flasks of mojo. Back in the days of grinding LW I was stupid and didn’t know where to get these. Well, Hinterlands trolls GIVE these things away like Halloween candy. The beauty of this is that you can grind on the turtles at the shore line (and collect scales too) then for a switch you can beat on trolls for awhile and get mojo all without changing zones.

ALTERNATE OPTION

220-235 Tough Scorpid Bracers http://www.thottbot.com/?i=7601
If youre not into the whole mountains and oceans theme but would rather climb sand dunes and bake in the sun, these are for you. Tanaris and Burning Steppes scorpions drop these at a decent rate and are plentiful. Burning Steppes has a better drop rate but you need to be in your mid 50s to get them.

Life gets MUCH easier from here…for awhile

230-245 Nightscape Pants http://www.thottbot.com/?i=3149
The great thing about these are they don’t have any ridiculous secondary mats like turtle scales or scorpion scales and are available from your trainer. They are however, leather hogs. The plus is though, they DE into Dream Dust and Greater Nether Essence which sell very well. You do have level 5 AH whore that can DE don’t you???

235-250 Nightscape Boots http://www.thottbot.com/?i=6735
(see above)

250-265 Rugged Armor Kits http://www.thottbot.com/?i=5749

260-275 Wicked Leather Bracershttp://www.thottbot.com/?i=14890
260-300 is the return of the suck. All the patterns are either drops or specialization patterns. Youre just gonna have to fork over the coin. If you have a good guild, see if someone has a few of these patterns gathering dust in the bank. These bracers (along with all wicked items) are great to skill up on and rogues will buy them. If you don’t want to or have trouble selling them, they DE into Dream Dust and lesser eternal essence.

280-300 Wicked Leather Headband http://www.thottbot.com/?i=5404
If you can limp your way up to 280 Then these will take you all the way to the promised land. They sell well (as long as the AH isnt flooded) and they DE into Dream Dust and Greater Eternal Essence. I still make these from time to time JUST to get the GEE.

Make no mistake, LW SUCKS to max out because of the INSANE amount of leather you need to do it. If you have the money, buying stacks off the AH from time to time really helps keep your sanity on the way to 300. If not, just keep killing and skinning. You’ll get there eventually.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Making 1000 Gold In One Week (Warcraft demo)

Getting your epic mount can seem a very hard task when you figure you have to spend 800 gold just for one item, unless you’re a warlock or paladin of course , but it’s really not.

It’s actually much easier than you think, and something that you may actually never have thought of.

I don’t remember where I heard this, but it WORKS VERY WELL.

What you want to do is first head to felwood which is east of Darkshore.

Here you will find Withered Protectors: http://www.thottbot.com/?n=6474
and Warpwood Shredders: http://www.thottbot.com/?n=6486

The protectors have, according to thottbot, a 3% chance of dropping major healing potions, but I found it to be more in the range of 10%.
On my server (Skullcrusher) one major healing potion sells on the AH for 1g.

In addition to dropping potions, they also drop high-level herbs that can sell on the AH for ~ 10g for a stack of 20.

Another way to make good money……ENGINEERING.

This is actually pretty simple:
High lvl explosives.

People actually buy things such as:
Small Bronze Bomb http://www.thotbott.com/?i=5418 for a good amount of money, way more than the mats cost on the AH.
Also: Heavy Dynamite http://www.thotbott.com/?i=5421

The mats for these are relatively inexpensive, and the bombs and dynamite sell fast! (On my server anyways). People buy the dynamite for extra dps, and the bombs for stunning people.

All you do is buy a stack of 20 wool cloth, which seems to have skyrocketed to about 1g the past couple of months and a stack of 20 stones. Make that blasting powder and enjoy!

You can usually make about a 5-6g profit on the dynamite/bombs after being sold on the AH.

I made ~ 1000g in a week

I have come to understand that this is not common knowledge to all rogues and I have yet to see it on any site upon performing multiple searches.

This can be soloed for about 200G per hour or done with 2 rogues for about 1000G.

I do this solo but in fairness I have exceptional gear. I’m sure it could be done with good blue gear. If you have problems with this, get a partner to help you. Frankly, as much money as this can make you, it wouldn’t be a horrible crime to complely stock up on greater fire protection pots, elixir of mongoose, giant potions, etc. A death will cost you about 6 minutes and time is money.

You will also need improved sap. 100G worth of respeccing is a small price to pay for a weekend of making thousands.

On to the solo strategy:

In Lower Blackrock Spire you want to stealth to the right in the same manner as you would normally clear the dungeon. You’ll come around to the left after dropping off the first ledge and work your way to two doors (one after the other) that are very close to each other and have roaming mobs going through them. After you pass the second door, stop. To your right you should see a ledge. Across from that ledge is another ledge where you will see a bunch of ogres. If you move towards that ledge and look down you will see a platform that you can jump onto. Jump to it. Now move forward and you will see another platform. Jump to it. Lastly you will jump to the ground floor where you will see several tents. When you jump down, fall, don’t jump or it will break your stealth. Watch out for roaming mobs. You don’t want to fall on them.

Continue on until you get to the hill where the spiders are. As soon as you reach this hill you will come to a nook on your right that most groups that do LBRS skip. In that nook you will see three groups of mobs. To the left are 3 mobs, to the right are 3 mobs and in the back right corner are 2 mobs. The two groups of 3 are not linked but all 6 will aggro if you pull one because the two groups are too close together.

Behold my brilliant artwork!: http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h216/cyberrico/LBRS.jpg

What you want is one of the two mobs in the back. One of these mobs is a Blackrock Pyromancer. He is what you will want to kill, so sap the other guy and go up the little hill behind you. Ranged pull the pyromancer. Just before he gets in range hit evasion and kill him as quickly as possible. He will flee just before he dies, so crippling poison is your friend. You could use kidney shot just before he gets to 20% life but why waste it on a fleeing mob?

As soon as you kill him, loot him and vanish.

Duo Strategy

Kill the group in the back in the same manner but don’t waste your vanish. Two rogues shouls make extremely short work of both mobs. Heal up, wait for your curses and such to fade and get ready for some big packs.

The problem with the next pull is that you have 6 mobs to deal with. If the two "inside mobs" are both Pyromancers, dump this pull and reset. The only way you can continue is to reset, fight 4 elits at the same time or kill a couple, die and come back to an easier pull. In any other case, you want to sap "inside mob1" or inside mob2". If one of them is a pyromancer, don’t sap it, sap the other one and have your partner sap one of the other mobs in sapped mob’s group. See this diagram: http://s65.photobucket.com/albums/h216/cyberrico/th_LBRS2.jpg

Kill the unsapped pyromancer and vanish.

The duo strat is complicated. You will find that there are several configurations to deal with. I prefer to solo but I make a ton of money if I duo all of the mobs.

Your prize is this: http://www.thottbot.com/index.cgi?i=28217

It is one of the best robes that a mage can find if he doesn’t raid and that is more than 99% of the mage population. Even raiding mages have bought these from me as gaining archanist or something similar isn’t necessarily an overnight process for a new raider. The best part of this robe is that it’s bind on pickup. The pattern is bind on use but the robe binds when you make it, so the crafter can only make it for himself.

Yes the downside is that the mage has to be a 300 tailor. I have sold this pattern to 100 people that picked up tailoring just to make this robe. Many dumped tailoring after making it.

These patterns sell for about 200 gold on my server. I’ve found and sold as many as 5 in a day.

Even better is this http://www.thottbot.com/index.cgi?i=16100

They sell for 300-400 gold on my server. They don’t drop nearly as often as the robe pattern does but it’s a nice payday when they do. I also find a ton of blues (shadowcraft, valor, etc). Those always sell pretty nicely.

My worst one hour session was about 70 gold. My best was 1000 gold (3 patterns, 1 fire recipie and 2 blues).

Again, if you’re having trouble with the solo strat, get a partner. Two rogues in green gear can easily handle the solo strat.

Happy hunting!

Yesterday my friend was using his Lev 60 hunter to help me run quests for a new char I am grinding. He took me to an amazing spot I hadn’t seen previously.

In the far Western shore/cliff there is a windmill surrounded by about 15 members of the local Derathi thieves guild. This is by no means unique in Westfall, however the amount of them are……and they all INSTA spawn after being looted. While I was running about killing boars and harvesters for a few quests he sat there and pelted these guys for about 20-30 minutes just to get linen cloth for the AH.

Lo and behold, after about 20 minutes he had 300 linen in his coiffers! So this little spot is SUPERB for low level 10-20 grinding, and also a great money maker at HIGH levels.

Let’s do the quick math on the linen for my pal. As of this morning stacks of 20 linen are selling for 50s on the Zul’Jin AH.

300/20 = 15 stacks

Now assuming he continued making that 300 linen in 20 minutes, multiply that by 3. 600 linen or 45 stacks. That’s 22 gold on the AH. Certainly nothing groundbreaking but for people at lower levels, or even higher levels who simply want no risk gold grinding.

The best part about this place is it is NON STOP. Literally NON STOP. Check it out, amazing stuff.

Sneak Peak At Jewelcrafting (Warcraft 1)

Based on what’s here, alot of the speculations we wouldbe jewelcrafters made appears to be correct. I can almost TASTE the gold.

Making some educated assumptions about jewelcrafting, we come to the conclusion that "prospecting" will be a passive function of jewelcrafting along the lines of smelting, find ore or find herbs.

Combine prospecting with all the aparently new types of gems and ore added (garnet, peridot, spesserite, dreanite, adamantite and eternium) and raw ore will be in CRAZY high demand.

Now, take a leap of faith with me on this one because we are applying real world facts to WoW….

Gems like peridot and garnet are semi-precious stones. That would leave one to conclude that they will be obtained from ore that would fall in the same category ala iron, mithril and thorium. Possibly rares like gold, silver and true silver as well. Since there will be exactly ZERO garnet, peridot and the other gems in the market when TBC is launched, these gems will be very valuable.

All this means that raw ore will be expensive. Even if you have no desire to be a jewelcrafter, if you have a miner, I would start (if you havent since the last time I told you it was a good idea) stocking away all manner of ore for the expansion.

** NOTE: I tried posting this directly to the WOW Strategies forum but don’t see it appearing after a few hours so retrying as a formal submission. **

I tried to search MPS for reference to this but didn’t yield anything so allow me to share. Apologies if this is a repeat in any form. I’ve benefited since joining MPS about a month ago so now would like to contribute something back.

Location: Feralas (http://www.thotbott.com/index.cgi?m=14742)
Mobs: Woodpaws
Type: Humanoid
Mob Level Range: 40-43
Cash: 3/5
Loot: 3/5 (decent greens drop rate and lots of mageweave)

Ideal Classes: All (but rogues will benefit most due to PP)

Note the density depicted in the link above. To be effective for grinding purposes, a spawn site has to have plentiful mobs and ideally a reasonably good spawn rate. Your only downtime should be occassionally bandaging or eating combined with creating more bandages. ;) Those things and an ability to rapidly mow through the mobs with good xp return rate. This location has that for all classes I believe but as a rogue, it was stellar.

The camp is huge and the respawn is on a relatively short timer. This camp can serve 2-3 people farming it without much issue and repops can keep up. I developed a loop on the Western side of the camp and just kept making laps. 40% of the mobs are casters which makes them very soft targets. Of the remainder, 25% or so are "hunters" with rifles and the final 35% are straight up melee that chage you. These guys do run when low on health to get a friend so be mindful of that. It wasn’t an issue for me but heads up given.

Here is the strategy I employed that took me from 46-47 in good time at a rate of 24k xp/hour, netted me 240+ mageweave, 60+ silk, roughly 40+ junkboxes that skilled me up from 200 lockpicking (gave others to guildies to help them skill up) and if I recall, about 20 greens and 3 blue items. All in all, in gold I picked & looted + vendor trash + AH items, it was on average 20g+ an hour.

Strategy:
Get familiar with the camp and identify escape trajectories in case you need them. Lots of good run off space so it shouldn’t be a problem. If you are a rogue, stealth up and either a) perform the loop and PP them all ahead of time or PP as you go. I chose to PP first them straight up melee through them for efficiency sake. Then just kill, loot, rinse, repeat.

There you have it. Not terribly complex but a pretty good spot overall. You could probably do the camp as early as 44-45 given the mobs vary in range from 40-43. I’ve found that optimum pace and dmg dished vs. damage taken seems to hit a sweet spot at around the -3 mark. This was true when I was in STV and doing the VC gnomes as well and it proved the same here. When you outgrow these, you can move West past the mountains and hit up the large Ogre camp as well. Lots of casters there as well.

The WOW pvp system awards time and not skill, so if you don’t have 12 hours a day for PVP’ing, going for exalted with one of the factions in the battlegrounds, will most likely get you better results gear-wise. The advantage of going for exalted with the BG factions is that your reputation gains aren’t reliant on others, as it is with the PVP system, so you can gain rep when you want and it doesn’t decay.

There are 3 battlegrounds; Alterac Valley (AV), Arathi Basin (AB) and Warsong Gulch (WG).

Warsong Gulch
Warsong Gulch is 10 vs 10 capture the flag. The games themselves are bracketed in the usual brackets (10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60) and the reputation scale to the lvl.

Horde gains repuation with Warsong Outriders and Alliance gain it with Silverwing Sentinels.

Reputation gains are as follows (WOWwiki.com)

Quote: Honor Rewards
The game awards bonus honor to everyone on your side of the match for reaching certain goals. Those goals are:

capturing the opponents flag, rewards 396 honor (at level 60)
winning the match, rewards 198 honor (at level 60)
Honor for lower level matches scales down from the amounts given. Other scored events are not granted honor. These include: killing blows, picking up the opponent’s flag, and returning your flag to your base. Honor is awarded for honorable kills as normal.

Winning a complete match (3 captures and the win bonus) gives you 1386 honor (at level 60). It also awards you 3 marks of honor. Turning in the quest for 3 marks of honor is worth an additional 396 honor points.

Losing a complete match (0 captures and a loss) gives you no bonus honor. The only honor you will accumulate will come from honorable kills. You will receive 1 mark of honor at the end of a loss, so you can still collect 3 and turn in the quest as given above.

During the Warsong Gulch Battlegrounds Holiday, you will earn double reputation bonus for each flag captured on your team. The winning team will earn an additional 990 bonus honor (at level 60) for completing the match, in addition to the usual 198 bonus. The losing team will earn 594 bonus honor at the end of the match. Thus a 3-0 match will award a total of 2376 honor to the winners, and 594 honor to the losers during the holiday.

Reputation
Flag Capture – 35 reputation for entire team (10 extra reputation on a Battlegrounds Holiday for a total of 45).
3 Marks of Honor – 50 reputation, or 100 reputation if done through Concerted Efforts or For Great Honor quests.

As can be seen, in this BG you really need to win, to be able to rep up properly. Therefore it’s one of the more difficult ones (as opposed to AV), to rep up consistently. Pray your side is good :)

Exalted rewards
These are the lvl 60 rewards. There are also epic rewards for the 40-49 and 50-59 bracket. Check http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/basics/factions/warsong/index.html for all the rewards.
